How to make your bedroom healthier

Your bedroom is the place where you rest, relax and recharge. You should go into your bedroom and leave it feeling de-stressed and ready to take on the world. This means that your bedroom needs to promote health and relaxation. However, not all bedrooms do. Here are some tips on how to make sure that your bedroom leaves you feeling healthy.

Open the windows

It may seem simple, but opening the windows is so important in making sure that your bedroom is healthy. During summer, you probably do have your window open because of the heat. However, you should also open your window when it’s cold. This is because it allows airflow and cycles out stale air. There is a disease called sick building syndrome (SBS) that is caused by staying in a building with poor ventilation. Mold also loves rooms with no air circulation because it leads to condensation. You don’t need to keep your window open all day – just open it for small parts of the day to keep things fresh and healthy.

Get a high-quality mattress

Your mattress can have a huge impact on how you sleep, and good sleep is essential to good health. Sleep deprivation can lead to a huge variety of physical and mental health issues, including increased risk of heart disease, a weaker immune system, weight gain, anxiety, depression and even psychotic episodes. A high-quality mattress will be comfortable, supportive and will not get too hot – and choose cooling bed sheets with lyocell construction because they are soft, cool and breathable.

Paint your room in calming colors

This may sound bizarre, but studies have found that people who sleep in rooms with calmer colors sleep better. A 2013 study by hotel chain Travelodge found that people who slept in rooms that were blue, yellow, green, silver and muted orange were sleeping better than people in rooms of other colors. In fact, people in the blue room were found to be sleeping seven hours and 52 minutes, on average. However, when painting your room, make sure to use paints that have no or very low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) because these can be released by the paint and cause headaches and dizziness.

Buy a houseplant for your room

Plants are great. They filter out nasty carbon dioxide and release oxygen for us to breathe. In a small environment such as a room, a single houseplant can have a really positive impact. As well as increasing oxygen levels, plants also filter toxins, such as VOCs, out of the air they process. There have also been studies in hospitals where patients with plants in their rooms have reported less pain, lower heart rates and less anxiety and fatigue.

Wash your sheets regularly

Bodies are a bit gross – lying on your bed will leave behind skin cells and moisture from sweat. Leaving your sheets unwashed will allow these to accumulate, leading to a chance of catching something. Avoid this by washing your sheets, duvet covers, mattress covers and pillow cases regularly.

Use blackout curtains

The darker your room is at night, the better you will sleep. Lighter curtains can be nice for creating a soft glow during the day when they’re closed, but they aren’t very good at blocking out light for when you want to sleep. Get blackout curtains and then open them when you get up to quickly expose yourself to sunlight and wake up your body.

Dust regularly

Leaving dust on your furniture will lead to dust mites in your room, and dust mites are a leading cause of allergies and asthma. Avoid this by dusting your room every week. Dust furniture, window sills, floorboards and everywhere else dust can collect.

Don’t spend all day in your room

A good way to improve your sleep is to spend as little time in your room as possible. Your brain should associate your bedroom and your bed with sleeping. If you spend all day lying on your bed reading, listening to music or looking at your phone, then your brain will stop associating your room with sleep, making it more difficult for you to get to sleep. Additionally, being out of your room will mean less dust accumulating and less clutter appearing.


As you can see, there are various simple ways that you can make your bedroom a healthy sanctuary. You will spend a third of your day in your bedroom, so it is essential that it is a healthy place.
